WA1MYQ Story in pictures

This is a photo taken around 1972 or 3 just after I got my general. You see an old tv cabinet in my cellar used to hold some of the ham gear. Inside on the bottom right is a globe scout and an antenna tuner on top of it. Beside of it a coax switch and infront a mike. On top is a hammarlund hq-129-x receiver and on top of that is an RME receiver.... my FIRST ham receiver. My Wn1myq station consisted of the RME and the globe scout on crystal control on cw. I had an ARC 5 that I used a couple of times to vfo control the globe scout or barefoot on cw. Back then VFO was NOT allowed till you were a general. The Novice band was VERY crowded. On the right on top of another cabinet you can barely make out a heathkit dx100.. my first high power am xmitter. I also had a couple of arc 5 xmitters and another no name transmitter I picked up at the Cival Air Patrol. It was fun to mix and match.

This is the myq shack around 1980 or so. TV cabinet gone replaced by a table. BC 610 replaced the other side tv cabinet and was my first high power xmitter near my legal limit on cw. Behind it on far left is my 4-400 rack mounted rig with 811 modulator. These were a couple of nice sounding xmitters. At this point I had removed my home brew pre amp with reverb to manchester. I was using a smaller mike amp on top of the sx101 receiver you see. I had begun to migrate all my good stuff to Manchester where I worked and lived. For years from 1972 on I came home most every weekend to see friends and use my ham shack. My land lords did not care for my ham hobby but I did it anyway. Still, Claremont was always the better antenna and higher power. You can also see my home brew open wier tuner, and tcs xmitter that drove the bc610  on bottom mid left. on the right and out of the picture was my wa1myq shack recorder that caught many moments on tape. The speaker had some water damage on the cloth LOL.

This Photo was taken around 1981 or so. I was living in the basement of a private home at this time. Not much problem getting on ham but lousy antenna and signal. Still had fun however. On lower left is the homebrew audio preamp with reverb. The reverb spring is that thing you see with the Raytheon oval shaped sticker on it on left. On top is the Viking Vallient II I still own. In middle on table is the HQ-129-x and on top of it is the KLM Multi 2700. I still have that as well. On that is a home brew bread board 12v supply for the 40ch cb above it and then the swr bridge and speaker. On right is my Linear amp that I almost never used and on top my kenwood TS 530 SSB transceiver that I still own. On that another better swr bridge and speaker and electronic keyer. Behind speaker is a coax switch and on wall MANY qsl cards that are still on my present ham shack wall. The trophy is one I won candlepin bowling... got 2and place. The large clock on wall is still in my present shack.

Finally here is my shack as it appears today. The rack is home brew with help of a friend. On top left and right are my speaker system. Below not shown is a 150w subwoofer. This is NOT connected to ham receiver YET. The tape recorder is a roberts and is being phased out as I dub all my tapes to mp3. Same thing for the record player as shortly it too will disappear. The Techniques amp is now gone replaced with a much better Sony surround sound amp. On the bottom right is the viking vallient xmitter and to left the HQ-129x. Above you will see the kenwood ts-430 and far right is a Royce 40ch base CB rig. Above is my Kenwood TS 530 and to far left is the KLM Multi 2700 again.   The hamshack is mostly not used. The antenna system here is a 150 ft wire 30 feet up and end feed. I plan to upgrade to a dipole open wire fed. I will sell the HQ-129x and Vallient and also the TS 530 and the KLM Multi-2700.  The KLM has NO PL tones and scan function and is large for what I need it for. Size also problem for old tube stuff on bottom. I plan to purchase a dual band 2m /  440 fm to replace the KLM that will have PL and scan functions. I plan to get a computer controlled xceiver and have its audio output sent to my stereo system for some great sound. I may also build and patch into this a hi fi audio system for some good sounding am. I plan to buy a linear amp for power when needed. All this should take up less space but give more functionality.

Airchecks

These are tape recordings made from the early 60,s to late 70s in the basement at my mom's place where I had my ham shack. I had a battery reel to reel hooked to my receiver waiting for fun to begin. Other recordings off my OLD waist high radio that get me interested in ham radio. I would tune in am ham operators. I liked Tim and the gang the most. These recordings represent some of the fun moments and memories of those ham days gone past.
